Mari Boine has been the voice of Sápmi in the last three decades. Her voice and her music has reached people all over the world. Photographer and author Susanne Hætta followed Boine with the camera for two and a half years; on stage, in the recording studio, outdoors and in Boine private sphere. The result is a coffee table book in English and Sámi: “Mari Moments – Mari Liibbat”. In the book the photos are accompanied by Mari Boine’s own reflections on topics that lies close to her heart, like environmental issues, culture, spirituality and about finding joy in life after an upbringing with religious and cultural oppression. I addition, the reader will find many of Boine’s older song lyrics, and two of her lyrics from her latest album, “See The Woman” (released March 3, 2017).
The book gives the reader a sense of closeness to a well-known artist, but whom we may still not know all that well. The photos show Mari Boine as we have never seen her before. The book came out in the Sámi centenary “Tråante 2017” as a tribute to a Sámi artist who has contributed tremendously to the recognition of the Sámi voices.
Mari Boine har vært Sápmis viktigste stemme de siste 30 årene. Hennes musikk har nådd langt utenfor landegrensene. Fotograf og forfatter Susanne Hætta har fulgt Boine med kameraet i to og et halvt år; på scenen, plateinnspilling, i naturen og i Boines private sfære. Resultatet er en praktbok på engelsk og nordsamisk: “Mari Moments – Mari Liibbat”. I boka ledsages fotografiene av Boines egne refleksjoner om temaer hun er opptatt av, som naturvern, kultur, åndelighet og om det å finne igjen gleden etter en oppvekst med religiøs og kulturell undertrykking. I tillegg trykkes flere av hennes eldre sangtekster, samt to nye sangtekster fra Mari Boines siste album “See the woman” (utgitt 3. mars 2017).
Boka gir oss nærhet til en artist vi alle kjenner til, men kanskje ikke kjenner. Fotografiene viser Mari Boine slik vi aldri har sett henne. Boka kommer ut i det samiske jubileumsåret Tråante 2017, som en hyllest til en samisk artist som har betydd enormt for anerkjennelsen av de samiske stemmene.
